Flower

The flower is commonly referred to as a weed or pot. This is the raw form of cannabis, which consists of the dried leaves and buds from female Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica plants. It has a strong and distinct odour before and during smoking, which sets it apart from common kitchen herbs.

Weed is commonly smoked in hand-rolled cigarettes, known as joints or pre rolls, where its lumpy texture can be felt through the rolling paper.

There are two main types of weed flower. They vary in effects and the kind of high they produce.

Indica

Originating from the Hindu “Kush” region near Afghanistan, Cannabis indica thrives in cold, mountainous climates, which gives it a bush-like appearance with darker, fuller leaves and clumpy buds. It’s known for its high THC content and low CBD levels, which induce deep relaxation and sedation. It’s enjoyed before bedtime to promote a “body high.” Its sedative effects make it a great choice for those battling insomnia.

Sativa

Cannabis sativa is native to warmer climates like Mexico and South Africa. It grows tall with long, thin leaves and requires specific light conditions for flowering. With lower THC levels and higher CBD content than indica, sativa strains offer a balanced experience known for their energizing effects. Users describe a cognitive or “head high.” Sativa is favoured by those combating depression or fatigue, with reported relief for ADHD and mood disorders.

Hybrid

Hybrid strains blend the characteristics of Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa with a mix of effects. Most strains cultivated today are hybrids with variations based on their dominant traits.

Edibles

Cannabis can be consumed orally, commonly cooked into food, known as edibles. Brownies or cookies are classic options, but they can also be added to various foods, even candy.

The process involves infusion, where activated cannabis compounds are added to edibles through decarboxylation, which alters the chemical structure by applying heat, which makes cannabis psychoactive.

Next, the decarboxylated cannabis is infused into butter or oil and then added to edible products. The psychoactive effects of edibles take longer to kick in and can be potent.

Anecdotal evidence suggests edibles may help conditions like pain, nausea, epilepsy, PTSD, and depression, but overconsumption can lead to issues like motor impairment, cognitive problems, agitation, and sedation.

Concentrates

Cannabis concentrates are made by distilling specific parts of the cannabis plant to increase the concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes. Various methods, such as dry and ice processing, produce concentrates, which result in liquid wax, soft solid, or hard solid forms. These concentrates are consumed differently based on their form.

  • Shatter. A glasslike concentrate that can be smoked on a hot surface.
  • Wax. A concentrate with a butter-like texture that can be smoked in a bong or pipe.
  • Oil. Liquid concentrate is consumed with a vape pen, sublingually, added to edibles, or taken in a capsule.
  • Tinctures. A cannabis extract is mixed with another substance like alcohol ingested by placing a few drops under the tongue.
  • Hash. Solid blocks are made from cannabis resin, which are commonly smoked and mixed with tobacco in various devices like pipes or bongs.

Vapes and Accessories

Vaping involves using small and handheld devices. It’s like smoking a cigarette, but instead of burning tobacco, vaping heats liquid particles. Most e-cigarettes include:

  • Cartridge, tank, or pod for holding liquid (which may be refillable).
  • The heating element turns liquid into breathable particles (aerosol, often called “vapour”).
  • Battery for powering the heating element.
  • Power or control button (some are activated by inhaling).
  • A mouthpiece for inhaling the aerosol.

CBD Products

CBD comes mainly from hemp, a type of cannabis sativa plant. CBD products may have trace amounts (no more than 0.3%) of THC, the compound in cannabis plants known for causing intoxicating psychoactive effects.

Despite this, consuming CBD doesn’t cause a “high.” Instead, it associates with receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), including those in the brain and spinal cord, potentially calming the central nervous system, relieving anxiety, improving sleep, and reducing inflammation and chronic pain symptoms.

CBD has three types:

Full-Spectrum CBD

This contains CBD and other compounds naturally found in hemp, such as terpenes and minor amounts of THC. These compounds may work together to enhance CBD’s therapeutic benefits, known as the “entourage effect.”

Broad-Spectrum CBD

Similar to full-spectrum CBD but with THC removed. However, some products may have minimal THC traces, so it’s safest to call them “nearly THC-free.”

CBD Isolate

Pure CBD is free of THC or other hemp plant compounds. It doesn’t create the entourage effect because it isolates CBD from other terpenes and cannabinoids.

Ways to consume CBD include sublingually (with oils or tinctures), orally via edibles like gummies or capsules, vaping or smoking, and topically through ointments or creams.
