The Journal of Sexual Medicine – Findings

Up to 41% of women face female orgasm disorder/difficulty (FOD), a statistic unaltered for 50 years. Despite this, there are few confirmed treatments. Research has hinted at cannabis as a remedy for female sexual disorders for over five decades.

However, a review found no studies testing cannabis as a treatment for FOD, nor any comparing women with and without FOD. This study marks the first to assess cannabis as a treatment for FOD specifically, comparing women with and without the disorder.

This observational study looked at basic information, sexual habits, mental health, cannabis use, and the orgasm section of the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). It assessed how repeatedly orgasms occurred, how satisfying they were, and how easy they were to achieve, both with and without using cannabis before sex with a partner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before sexual activity should I use cannabis?

If you’re smoking or vaping cannabis, use it about 30 minutes to an hour before sex to allow time for the effects to kick in. If you’re eating cannabis-infused edibles, take them 1 to 2 hours beforehand since they take longer to start working. Start with a small amount to see how it affects you and adjust from there.

What should I do if I experience negative effects from using cannabis sexually?

  • Reduce the Dose. If the negative effects are mild, they may be due to taking too much. Next time, try a smaller amount.
  • Stay Hydrated. Drink water or hydrating fluids to help mitigate effects like dry mouth or dehydration.
  • Rest. Find a comfortable, safe place to lie down and rest. Sometimes, negative effects diminish with relaxation and time.
  • Change Strains or Products. When ordering weed online, strains or types of cannabis products can have varying effects. Different strains or types of cannabis products can have varying effects. If one doesn’t suit you, another might work better. Explore the cannabis industry or look for “Canada buy weed online” to get a quality bud.
  • Take a Break. If cannabis consistently causes undesirable effects, consider taking a break from using it sexually or altogether.
  • Consult a Professional. If you have concerns about your reactions or if negative effects persist, speak with a healthcare provider or a cannabis-knowledgeable professional.

Can men also experience enhanced sexual experiences with cannabis?

Similar to women, men may find that cannabis use before sexual activity can lead to increased sensitivity, reduced anxiety, and potentially a greater ease in achieving orgasm. However, the effects can vary widely depending on the strain of cannabis, the dosage, and the individual’s physiological and psychological response to cannabis.

Some men report positive effects on their sexual experiences, and others might experience decreased libido or difficulty achieving orgasm. As with any substance, individuals must monitor their reactions and adjust their consumption accordingly.

Can cannabis use impact the use of contraceptives or pregnancy?

  • Impact on Contraceptives

There’s no direct evidence to suggest that cannabis interferes with the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives like pills, patches, or IUDs. However, cannabis use can influence behaviours and decision-making, potentially affecting the consistent and correct use of contraceptives.

  • Pregnancy

Studies have suggested that cannabis use during pregnancy can be associated with low birth weight, premature birth, and developmental issues later in life. Moreover, THC can cross the placenta, which might affect fetal development.

  • Fertility

Cannabis can impact fertility in both men and women. For men, cannabis use has been linked to changes in sperm count and motility. It may affect the menstrual cycle and ovulation for women.
